Migration and Society MASO graces Closing Ceremony at Thandazga Primary School on 28 March 2024

On Thursday, 28 March 2024 Migration and Society was in attendance during the closing ceremony at Thandazga Primary School off Mzuzu Academy as part of the “Excell in Education Project”. MASO is implementing this project with the aim of improving students’ academic performance. In order to achieve this, MASO is implementing performance-based competition through which the NGO gives out academic-related gifts to best performing students in all classes at the school. This is not the first time Migration and Society has distributed such gifts as hard covers, note books, ball pens and pencils at the school.

During the ceremony MASO’s Executive Director, Dr Harvey Chidoba Banda, was represented by the Project Officer, Kingdom Chavinda, and other Project Officers. On behalf of the Executive Director, Kingdom Chavinda delivered a motivational speech expressing MASO’s commitment towards transforming education standards in the country. He reiterated the fact that, under “Excell in Education Project”, MASO’s goal goes beyond providing gifts: it includes initiating various activities as part of quiz competitions, debate clubs and study circles.

By rewarding best performing students, MASO intends to inculcate a hard working spirit amongst students. During this ceremony, it was noted that in certain classes students’ performance was poor, for instance, in one class only 19 students passed out of 70 students. Such awards would motivate such students to work hard and persevere in their studies and this would, in turn, be a solution to the said poor performance.

During the ceremony, both the head teacher and the village headman urged parents to collaborate closely with their wards (students) to enhance students’ performance at the school. They also emphasized the importance of parents monitoring students’ school work, and ensuring their early arrival at the school. The two also encouraged teachers to take their duties with the utmost seriousness and commitment.

Migration and Society MASO is using “Excell in Education Project” as an avenue through which to ensure a change in mindset of both students and teachers. For instance, through a changed mindset, students will realize that excellence in education would enable one not only to secure good and better paying jobs, but also to start various income-earning opportunities, some of which would be more lucrative and satisfying than the salaried jobs.

In order to fulfill it’s goals under the “Excell in Education Project”, Migration and Society MASO is looking for financial support from well wishers and partnerships from organisations with similar interests.
